Meet My Sober Girlfriends Founder, Naomi Veak
Hi— I’m Naomi. I spent most of my adult life alternating between wanting to fit in by drinking and smoking pot and feeling isolated because I didn’t anyone to know I felt out of control.
I thought I was healthy because I drank good wine and got high to control my stress. Besides— I performed well in my career, exercised regularly, and ate organic vegetables. On the outside, everything looked great. So why did things seem off?
What I know now is that back in my early 20s, when I’d begun using weed, psilocybin mushrooms, and alcohol to numb grief and depression after my father’s suicide, I quickly got on the spectrum of marijuana and alcohol use disorder.
The Shift
In my 40s, after several years of aborted attempts to quit first one thing and then the other, I’d finally had enough. I committed to one full year sober “just as an experiment” and did everything I could think of to make it stick. My sobriety date is in May 2018.
A few months in, while doing a values exercise, I had a tingling full-body knowing that I wanted to live a soul-led life, which meant I would never drink or smoke weed again.
